Disposal of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
Who are the main Organisations involved?
European Union
The EU Parliament drafted the Directive and responsible for setting targets and producing the regulations to which member states will have to adhere.
Department for Trade and Industry
The DTI is responsible for transposing the WEEE Directive into UK law, working in partnership with the Devolved Administrations.
Environment Agency
The Environment Agency is expects its role will be to:
- approve and register producer compliance schemes
- register producers of electrical and electronic equipment
- identify ‘free-riders’ and bring them into compliance
- regulate sites for the storage and treatment of WEEE
- monitor and enforce compliance with the treatment and recovery requirements.
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
DEFRA is responsible for ensuring the permitting of Authorised Treatment Facilities for the WEEE Directive.
